Dear Ladies ... at the last luncheon we were treated to a male interloper in the world of us women networkers. Steve Cameron, Director of Advent Communication gave us an enlightening talk, thank you Steve.
We also were delighted to welcome Mary Harboe. Broadcaster of REM Radio and writer Mary’s tight schedule never allowed time for her to get away to see how it all work for us ladies. Mary has just had published a book called Gucci Wars by Jenny Gucci,described as ”How I survived murder and Intrigue at the heart of the world’s biggest fashion house.” Mary has put into words Jenny’s remarkable story.
Mary has also graciously agreed to write for our newsletter (see her story below). We are looking for more wordsmiths, writers and anyone interesting in helping to proof read and editing this newsletter. If you feel you can contribute please let us know.

| Thoughts on a Sabbatical |
| The word “sabbatical” originates from the ancient Israelites’ custom of allowing their fields and vineyards to lie fallow every seventh year. Nowadays, of course, it is more usually used for taking a year off for study or travel. |
| For me, “sabbatical” equals “freedom”. |
| Freedom to be able to relax with the people I love when they need me - without counting days off, dashing to and from flights and frantically organising work cover. |
| Freedom to find my own natural creative work rhythm: so what if it happens to be from 2.22 to 6.06 in the morning, I can sleep later whenever I feel tired. |
| Freedom to wear whatever I fancy however inappropriate, to eat whenever I am hungry - not creating an anticipated appetite to fit around broadcasting commitments. Freedom to join a morning exercise class, to share lazy daytime chats with friends, to go for a walk, to have a massage… the list goes on and on but I am sure you get the picture. |
| What a heady feeling to have this freedom within my grasp, due to this wonderful word “sabbatical” - the adult version of a “gap year”. |

| You might wonder, why lighting? Why does it matter how we light our interiors? |
| Yes, it does! Lighting is the presentation of your space, brings balance between light & shade and if it is used skilfully, it will provide the final touch to your Interiors. Artificial light thrown onto surfaces of a room from different heights & angles will change and emphasize height, structure and materials. Whether your Interior is traditional or contemporary, the lighting is a vital tool that sets the mood. |
| For many people, the traditional central pendant is the main source of light, but on its own this type of lighting is unexciting and makes the space look flat. It will not fulfil the room’s potential, unless combined with other light sources. It is the combination of different light sources & their layering within the space that provides the key to a successful lighting design. |
| If, for example, you like to read in bed, but your partner doesn’t, then a good bedside lamp that illuminates just your pages is the answer. |
| Having task lights in the right places will make your life easier. That is why in the Kitchen, good worktop lighting is essential. A good pendant over your dining table should illuminate the food and not blind your guests. |

| New Driving Licence Laws |
New motoring legislation came into force on May 1st which substantially increases the penalties which courts can impose for the offence of driving without an appropriate licence, such as immediate detention and up to six months in jail. The traffic department estimates there are around a thousand unlicensed drivers in the province of Malaga and local police are now instructed to detain anyone who cannot produce the correct document. The order to detain drivers immediately also applies to those who do not possess the appropriate licence for the vehicle being driven. It doesn’t apply to those found to be driving on a licence after losing all their penalty points or to those who cannot produce their licences on demand or those driving on a licence issued by another EU country which has expired or which is not backed up by a medical certificate. Drivers holding non-EU licences are also exempt provided that they are still within six months of having arrived in Spain. |

| Spanish Wealth Tax Abolished |
The Spanish wealth tax, known in Spain as ‘patrimonio’ (Impuesto sobre el Patrimonio), has been abolished by Spain’s socialist government, fulfilling an electoral promise made 4 years ago before the Socialists took power. The wealth tax has been abolished as of 01/01/2008, so the change does not affect tax declarations for the tax year 2007. For most non-resident property owners the tax bill for the wealth tax was never very big but for most owners will nevertheless be welcome at a time when municipal taxes, mortgage rates, and other overheads for property owners are on the rise. |
